The Peasants’ War at the gates of Radolfzell
On the occasion of the exhibition in the Radolfzell town museum “Village life – history(ies) from the Radolfzell districts”, Jacqueline Berl reports on the events of the Peasants’ War in and around Radolfzell.
In October 1524, during the Hilzinger Kirchweih, the peasants of Hegau rose up.
Most of the villages in Hegau joined the uprising, and the number of troops is estimated at up to 14,000 men.
From April 1525, Radolfzell, town of the Hegau nobility and seat of the regional court, was surrounded and besieged.
In June 1525, advancing Überlingen and Vorderösterreich soldiers defeated the besiegers, and after further battles, the Hegau peasants surrendered in July 1525.
