One of us – a city breaks its silence!

Lecture by Jörg Schlenker in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Baden-Württemberg

An innkeeper from Schwenningen is executed as a war criminal by the Allies after the end of the war – how does a town community deal with this dark chapter in history? Jörg Schlenker researched the life story of Ewald Jauch, who was involved in the murder of 20 Jewish children and their adult carers in Hamburg in the final days of the Second World War.

The lecture reports on the experiences from the exhibition Ewald Jauch and the Children of Bullenhuser Damm, which was realized in 2023 in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and addresses the question of collective memory and how to deal with the National Socialist past: from the whispering city to the culture of remembrance.
