Karl Ruby – Catholic resistance as youth work

Lecture by Hildegard Bibby

Karl Ruby (1913-1990) came to Radolfzell as a vicar in 1937 and worked under the town priests Alfred Kuner and Josef Zuber. Ruby remained in Radolfzell until the end of 1945, where the young vicar carried out courageous and cleverly disguised youth work. In doing so, he strengthened the young people both in their faith and in their rejection of Nazi ideology. When Radolfzell was taken by the French on April 25, 1945, Karl Ruby played a decisive role in preserving the town alongside the town priest Zuber and a handful of Radolfzell men. The lecture focuses primarily on Ruby’s time in Radolfzell, but also looks at his family background and his further career after 1945.
