An extraordinary family recipe traces back to the roots of a moving story of emigration: On Thursday, December 3, at 7 p.m., Helmut Fidler will tell the story of “Aunt T’s” Hutzelbrot recipe, which is returning to the Lake Constance region from the U.S. after more than 150 years. It all began with a meeting with Laura Sylvan from Boston, whose ancestors emigrated from Möggingen and Schlatt unter Krähen to Ohio in 1868. Among their belongings was the recipe for a traditional fruit bread that had been passed down through generations in the family. Drawing on this family tradition, Fidler traces the fate of the Bechler family while also shedding light on the economic upheavals of the 19th century—from bankruptcies and real estate deals to emigration and a fresh start in America. The lecture combines regional history with personal stories and demonstrates how a simple recipe can become the key to a fascinating historical investigation.
